liminal

adjective

Occupying a position at or on both sides of a threshold. The quality of existing in transition, between what was and what is not yet.

Nuance

From the Latin limen, threshold. More precise than "transitional": liminal implies a sacred or charged in-between.

Airports have a liminal quality: everyone there is between one life and another.
