A period when normal government is suspended; a gap between two reigns or regimes. An interval of uncertainty.

Nuance

Gramsci: "the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters." The interregnum is that time.

We were living through an interregnum, the old order gone, the new not yet arrived.
